My website assignment

This is my website.
I tried to make a website about beauty culture in Hong Kong. Of coz all of the information are not real. However, I hope people can know more and aware of the trend of pursueing unnatural beauty.

The spring semester is going to end very soon, so as my life at SMC. I really enjoy my semester working with all of you. I am so grateful to be here. Although I stayed here for 4 months only, I got a lot and I learned a lot from every single one of you! Thanks and have a nice summer!

Art/ Cultural event (5)

14th March, 2007: Chelsea Museum of Art.

I remember I walked a long way before I got to the Museum. It was a small museum located between different Galleries. Differ from the ‘big’ museum I’ve been before, Chelsea Museum of Art is unique and ‘powerful’.
I was attracted by the theme of the exhibition: ‘Dangerous Beauty’.

Except the 3rd floor, all the Art works are closely related to the theme. Here are some of the art works that impressed me:

This is a pretty painting that brought out an idea that nowadays girls are becoming identical. Girls want to be slim and have ‘perfect’ body shape. Furthermore, plastic surgery also drive more and more girls to pursue artificial beauty.

These are wonderful pictures processed by using Photoshop, further illustrated the artificial beauty.

When talk about unnatural beauty, Barbie must not be excluded. Some people accused Barbie as the origin of encouraging the twisted idea of beauty.

I have a strong feeling to photos taken by Lauren Greenfield. The way she catches images and the emotional feeling involved in the pictures are so strong. I am interested in her work, therefore, I went to her personal website to know more about her.

After that, I figured out what I wanted to do with my website assignment.
Please check out Lauren Greenfield's personal website when you have time. it is really interesting.

Art/ Cultural event (4)

14th March 2007: Metropolitan Museum of Arts

During the trip to New York in spring break, I went to 4 museums. I was so impressed by the art works. Most importantly, I can feel the way people appreciate art and respect art in US, in NYC.

Metropolitan Museum of Arts is the most famous museum in Manhanttan (I guess). It is so huge that one day is not enough for walking around. I had very strong feeling about the displayed items. Since I didn’t have time, I just walked around theme exhibition, Egypt, the Asian historical arts, and the western painting sections.

The effort and time people put in investigation is appreciated. Thousands and thousands of ancient Egypt accessories, drawing, letters, sculptures, and mummies were kept in good condition. Here are some pictures I took in the exhibition.

When I was walking in the Chinese historical section, my heart felt pain. I have never seen such a big collection of Chinese ancient ‘evidence’. On one hand, I feel bad because American took our national properties and show them in their own country proudly. On another hand, the pain was mainly from shame. Chinese people are so unaware of our past. While foreigners treated the little pieces as treasures, Chinese treated them as trash.

The Western painting section was my favorite. I used to learn painting when I was younger. I haven’t picked my paint and brushes for years. The paintings are really amazing and perfect.

I hope some day; we can also have a great museum like this in our country. A museum collects all kinds of art work in the past and present.

7th March, 2007
Art Lecture: Candidate of Faculty member— Chris Coleman

Frankly, I like this lecture very much. Not only because of the interesting ideas behind the works of the artist; I gave credits to the artist’s good presentation skill.

Before becoming an artist, Chris Coleman was a Mechanical Engineer. I guess his former occupation did affect the choice of art works he makes. Before we listen to any information from him, he used a video clip as an introduction of his presentation.

It was a 3-minutes video clip shooting a chimney keeps producing and take-in the smoke it produces. The video have no narrative, no words, no information about the idea of this art works. Instead, there was breathing sound kept repeating in 3 minutes.

Some people may find that irritating. Honestly, I was bored by the video and wonder what message he wants to give before his explanation. The artist explained, we are actually breathing with the factory everyday, especially in city. The sky may look clear and clean, but the pollutants are actually collaborated in the air. Everyone of us should be condemned of pollution, because we buy the products and seldom aware of the pollution problem.
I appreciate his idea of putting environmental-friendly in art work; yet, the idea was hard to get without the artist’s explanation.

Another interesting work of Chris Coleman was the animation.
The animation he made was actually composed of the images we can see from airplane brochure. He brought out the fear and terror, safety and hazard ideas. He tried to use the same language to bring every daily event in a piece.

More of his art works could be found on his web site.

Art Lecture: Candidate of Faculty member-- Patrick Kelley

This was my second time to attend art lecture. The first one was Baldessari which is very different from the one that we had with Patrick Kelley. Since I was a few minutes late for the lecture (I’m so sorry about that), I missed the introduction of the artist. When I first got into the lecture room, I didn’t know who he is and what kind of art that he performs. However, I must give credits to his well-organized presentation. The smooth flow and stages of his changes and transformations were clearly shown step by step. I am not going to summary each part of his lecture, but some characteristics of his artworks could be easily extracted.

First of all, I would like to talk a little bit about his background. He was a Biology major, but he dropped it and changed to Art major as he found his interested in it. He started as a photographer, catching natural images around him. Most of the pictures he took are plants, ice, snow, pebbles and wood. His sense of color contrast (mostly black, grey white) impressed me. Even he took some ordinary pebbles or rocks beside the river, can give me a sense of peace and seems conveying messages to audiences.

Throughout the years from his first pick up of art and up until now, I can easily tell his transformation or his focuses on different aspects. The following is the sequence of his change of views:

Framing, space/ scale, link, connection, movement, involvement, sound/audio effect, imagination, and lately computer technology.

His change from capturing still picture to moving objects is interesting and showed linkage between different kinds of art. Although the speaker was a little bit nervous, I appreciate his artworks and his presentation.

Here I found some website related to Patrick Kelley:

This is his official website; you can find most of the information of him or his artwork.

and this one is just a one page description about this artist. You can browse it for more background information of Patrick Kelley.

I guess this one is the most interesting one among all website of the artist. It is about the flipbooks that he created. He also showed some of it in the lecture!

7th February, 2007
Art History Lecture: Heather McGuire on contemporary conceptual artist John Baldessari

This is the first art lecture I attended this semester. When the Lecturer started presenting, this first image we saw was a photograph of the artist, Baldessari standing in one of his Gallery with his works as background. This photograph is my favorite pieces among all the slides she has shown in the presentation.

The gallery has sky color carpet and the LA transport system on the ceiling. The reverse of “rightness” in our mind aroused my interest to know more about this artist.

Actually, I was quite impressed by the artist’s “rebellious”. There was a quote of his WRONG definition(1967); he said a piece of art work could be wrong to others, but right to the artist himself. I believe he was one of the supporters of the ‘everything could be an art” concept.

He said that “language” is a material in making art. In 1971, he invited different people to write “I will not make any more boring art” repeatedly on the wall. The different handwritings and different colors of paints people used composed an interesting image, an art.

Sometimes when I draw or making digital imaging, I hesitate to add words on my artwork. Words could help expressing the information; it could also ruin the whole idea of the art work if it is not used appropriately.

“Language is not transparent.” (1970)

However, after appreciating John Baldassari’s art works, I feel easier when I have to make decision on using language on art work or not.

And he is really cool because he took picture of pencil before and after sharpening it. (The Pencil Story 1972-1973) Sharpening a pencil could be also defined as art, I can also call my works as art confidently.

Here is a link to John Baldassari's web page. Besides the art works, interviews, bibliography etc., it is a well designed web site which worth spending time on studying.

Response to Reading assignment

When I was reading the article, I wonder if I was reading the right assignment. I couldn’t find anything related to Art. Instead, I felt like I was reading science journal. The scientific terms and facts confused me. However, the central idea gradually became clearer when the history developed to ‘Internet’, the more familiar word.

I read one of the paragraphs about categorizing different websites into six domains: Org Gov Edu Com Net Mil. Actually I always have a silly question. Is there any organization which monitors the registration? I mean, is it possible if people want to register as “.gov” for fun?

I sort of like the way the writer compare between ‘English’ and ‘Internet’. Nobody own English, not even English speaking person, so as the internet. Every user can feel free to utilize and exploit this domain; yet, internet is a public properly which belongs to no one.

I feel like this article is merely about the development of internet history. I was quite surprised by the quick development of internet. Actually it doesn’t have a long history (one article can illustrate most of them!), but its speed of improvement was really amazing.

About the oil website, it brought out the same controversial topic- fluctuation price of oil. Similar to internet technology, both of them change in every minute. I like the way they presented the importance of oil. They use the price of oil to replace all prices originally in US dollars.

It reminds us that oil is the public property everyone should protect and save. Over-exploitation could lead to serious danger. Same as the case of internet, internet is a good pool resources that everyone have rights to enjoy, but the mis-use of it could destroy everything one day.

Written Proposal of Postcard Project

In the Postcard Project, I will try to place Billie Holiday and Cab Calloway together. The concept that brought them together is music. Both of their work and career were closely related to Jazz and were very famous in their profession. Since I would like to dedicate my appreciation to these two musicians in the two post cards, I will place their pictures in different postcard. For instances, on the left one would be Billie Holiday singing in a lounge while on the right will be the picture of Cal Calloway directing a orchestra.

In order to add strong linkage between the two postcards, I chose to use a bridge in New York to run across two postcards. Both of them lived in New York for a certain period of time. Though in actual life, the musicians may not know each others, I will try to show that the musicians were in love, by adding two small figures on the bridge and the romantic starry background. I will try to capture the image of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York during Spring break.

For the separation line, I will try to cut with curly line. It may act as a hint for the receiver to connect two postcards together. I think the postcards can act as introduction of two musicians as well as tourist postcards of New York.

My response to Cut-up method

After reading the three pages article about Cut-up method, I have an idea that this reading and the first reading that we did before (use of forms) can be fragmented into pieces and be recombined into a “new” article.
The basic idea of this reading introducing the Cut-up method is quite the same as the Use of form reading. In this article, the artist Burrough not just focused on “recombination”; he emphasis the “randomness”. Instead of focusing on preexisting objects or artworks, he used lots of textual elements to explain his ideas. The largest difference is the “consciousness” of artists in making the artwork. Like photographers and writers, their best works may be accidents. Unlike the artists mentioned in Use of forms who may have plans before making the artwork, accidental happenings are the premier idea that Burrough suggested.
However, I also found some similar ideas that I have learned throughout the whole class. “Poetry is for everyone” have been mentioned at least three times in the article. For me, I think the sentence is meaning: Art belongs to everyone. Everyone can be an artist and artworks are subjective and unable to please everyone on earth. Artworks are very personal products of artists, therefore, as Burrough mentioned: there maybe special meanings or code messages for the cutter himself/ herself.

My response to DADA~

After browsing around the DADA website, I am interested in the pieces of Art works shown in different categories. The most impressive part for me is that the idea or the concept adopted by Dadaist is consistent with what we have read from the first reading “the use of form”. In our reading, we explored about the recombination of art works of different forms, for instances, the remix of music by deejay. However, in the website, it is more focusing on artworks using “readymade” elements as tools.
Furthermore, there is another idea I found in the website, in common with our reading. That is, everything could be art, even the daily candy wrappers, pictures, or words printed in different fonts.

I looked at Schwitter's artwork, he adopted at least two kinds of technique in his works. Artwork #1, Artwork #2

On artwork #1, assemblage of wood, oil, metal, and board on board, with artist's frame were used as material. These material are all things that we may use in daily lives. So this is the collage technique.

On artwork #2, in this piece of artwork, not only collage was adopted, with the use of different size and types of fonts, typography is used.

My feeling after producing the journey~

After producing my journey from Hong Kong to here, I realized Janet Cardiff’s work is not an easy task. It is so difficult to compose a smooth journey. With the aid of different techniques, like Amplifying, Fade-in, Fade-out, and sound volume, it became more like a “Real” journey. The aircraft noise keeps flowing in my head now. I tried to use some common sound that listener may know without my explanation. So that when people listen to my journey, they can understand and involve in it.

Here are my attribution to the sound I have downloaded from free sound project.

My response after listening to Janet Cardiff's work- Whitechapel walk

After listening to her work, Whitechapel walk, I feel little bit tired. Although it is not long journey, I have to use my mind to imagine the pictures that she want me to see. At the beginning, it was relaxing and enjoyable. However, the clip became more and more personal, which bored me a bit. She starts to talk about her grandma, her dog, her dream and her kiss… the freaky voice of a man is like a spirit haunting her, which make me felt uncomfortable. I have no idea what role he was playing, because they sometimes have conversations, but sometimes just like the man talking in air.
However, I appreciate the way she sees things. She can describe some minor things in very detail ways. For instance, when she passed by the lecture room, I could really imagine how the teacher gave lessons to her students. A full picture existed in my mind. My feeling is like being a blind person, led by her for a walk. It is interesting!

My response to the radio interview with Janet Cardiff

Before I clicked into the radio interview, I expected it to be a talk between the artist and the DJ. However, after I played the clip, I found it more like an introduction program of the artist. Janet Cardiff is a Canadian artist. Frankly, I like this interview very much. It’s because the closeness of sound brought me to another world, the world of Janet Cardiff. At the beginning, they just talked about the daily journeys that Cardiff may bring listeners to. When listeners pressed the “Play” button of her audio CD, they have to “surrender” and be absolute obedience to what she told us to do. For example: let’s walk down the stairs, blah blah... or even instruct the listeners to press “Stop” button at the end of the clip. Listeners walk into the world, which partially belongs to them. My favorite part of her audio was her voice. Her flat tone voice narrated the journeys and the stories that she composed. Especially with the aid of her 3-level spatial structure, listeners can have closer contact to the sound, and the technology device human ear processes make sound in her work intense and vivid. When Cardiff talks, her voice is so close as it is coming out from my head.

She may bring listeners to relaxing natural environment, but she may also bring listeners to travel through time and space to the past, revealing the actual scene of history. In the interview, they played a short clip of her work “The missing voice”, which is probably about the situation of London during WWII. She is able to bring sense of memories and danger to listeners. In my opinion, she is like writing a novel in an audio way. She tries to make listeners experience what she experiences, and try to make connections between individuals, which is quite meaningful and interesting. She mentioned one point that I totally agree with, she said people tends to filter out 90% of sound around us in our daily life. That is also my ambition in my audio project, to find out the sounds that may easily neglected and bring them together in my journey.
After listening to this interview, I would like to know more about this artist. I will try to browse for her art works and post some opinion after doing that.

This is my first attempt to make audio clip. I used two different sound found in Free Sound Project and they are sound made by different instruments. Though it's just a short piece, hope you enjoy it!

My written proposal of the Audio Project

In the Audio Project, I would like to use different sound to compose my journey from home to here, St. Mary’s College of Maryland. I think it is a good chance for me to record my feeling and emotional changes in this long journey. It is because memories will fade away if we don’t grasp it tight. Although it may not be a piece of interesting audio Project to everyone, it is meaningful to me. Art works never please everyone in the world. For the elements in the Project, I guess I could get most of the concrete sound from the free sound project. (In fact, I’ve already gathered most of them) I will also try to record some sound to represent my mental world. It’s hard to achieve and hard to represent to others, but I will try to work on it first. Maybe failure can bring me into a different world. Some tiny little sound maybe neglected in our daily lives. Through composing my journey, I should spare some quiet moments to rewind the tape in my mind. :>

My response to Sound Project

I clicked into John Lennon- Radio Play and I was unable to finish the whole clip. At first, I thought I have some problems with my computer. Because, the clip was just showing non-stop hesitate sound. I can’t relate it to “music” or “art” at all. And there was a man keep on talking in flat tone (like giving a lecture!) at the background, which was quite irritating. It was not enjoyable and I couldn’t find any description about what the project was about.
As what we have discussed in last lesson, “Art” is so subjective. I don’t know how to appreciate it, but maybe someone else may found it interesting and valuable. Different people have different rulers to measure “good or bad” in their mind.

My own response to the essay

After reading the essay, I’m quite confused about what is the underlying meaning of detournement. Yet, it is interesting that the writer connected Music, Movie and furniture in one single theme. The focus of the essay was on the “re-produce” art work base on “established/ old” artwork from others. There are artists speaking on both sides about it’s uprising popularity. For me, I think the foremost consideration is the respect pay for the originally producer. According to the writer, not only music, all kinds of art is personal. When an artist composes an art product, his/her own view and perception must have poured in it. Similar case to that, reediting preexisting product means another ones perception is involved. Therefore, twisting or altering is inevitable. "Not to be offensive" is the prime consideration.
Like deejaying, different kind of music can represent different people’s characters. At the same time, its existence is for catering different people’s need. Here is a link to DJ Mark the 45 King website. There is a Virtual mixer that everyone can use to make their own music according to their preference. It is funny because anyone can remix their own song by their own preference. Do-it-yourself became an popular culture nowadays.

This is all about Suicide!

At first, my attention was caught by the yellow bath duck. A bath duck is supposed to be a toy for children and associated with happiness. However, the artistic designer created it as a suicide tool. The title “One Use Only” means, after you use the toy, you will die and won’t get another chance to use it again!
When I click into other projects that deal with suicide, I was surprise that there are people making different tools for suicide purpose. For instances, “The Walker”, it is a metal device placed around the waist that tighten a bit for every step the user walk, until it is so tight that the user suffocated.
I thought these designers are crazy and cold blood. However, they claimed that their aim was to make aesthetical effects for suicide.

Hello~

This is a testing post!
